PetSafe Staywell Infrared Cat Flaps – 500 Series

The PetSafe Staywell 500 Series Infrared Cat Flaps use a coded infrared collar key to control which cats can enter through the flap. Unlike a standard manual cat flap, access is restricted to pets wearing the correct coded key, helping reduce unwanted visits from neighbouring cats.
These selective-entry cat flaps also feature a 4-way locking system, giving you control over whether your cat can enter, leave, move freely in both directions or remain indoors.
How Does an Infrared Cat Flap Work?
Your cat wears a small coded infrared collar key. When your cat approaches the flap, the key communicates with the locking mechanism and releases the door for an authorised pet.
This provides selective entry without relying on an implanted microchip. It can be a useful option for cats that are not microchipped or where an older Staywell infrared system is already installed.
4-Way Locking Control
Compatible Staywell infrared cat flaps provide four locking positions:
- In & Out – Free movement in both directions.
- In Only – Your cat can return home but cannot leave again.
- Out Only – Your cat can leave but normal re-entry is restricted.
- Fully Locked – Prevents normal entry and exit.
Why Choose an Infrared Cat Flap?
- Selective entry for authorised cats
- Helps discourage neighbouring cats from entering
- Coded collar-key operation
- No implanted microchip required
- 4-way locking control
- Useful for replacing older Staywell infrared cat flaps
- Replacement keys and parts available for selected models
Staywell 500 Series
The PetSafe Staywell 500 Series has been used in homes for many years, and replacement parts remain particularly important for customers maintaining older installations.
If you already have a Staywell infrared cat flap fitted and are unsure which replacement key, flap or accessory you need, check the model number on the existing unit before ordering.
Infrared Cat Flap or Microchip Cat Flap?
Infrared and microchip cat flaps both provide selective entry, but they identify your pet differently.
An infrared cat flap relies on a coded collar key worn by the cat, while a microchip cat flap can read a compatible implanted microchip.
If your cat already wears a collar and you're replacing an existing infrared system, staying with an infrared model can be straightforward. If you're choosing a completely new selective-entry cat flap, you may also want to compare our microchip models.
Need Help Identifying Your Staywell Cat Flap?
Older Staywell models can be difficult to identify because several ranges look similar. If you're unsure which model you own, send CatFlaps.co.uk a clear photograph of the inside and outside of the flap together with any model numbers or markings you can find.
We'll be happy to help identify the correct cat flap, collar key or replacement part where possible.
